Lightning and overvoltage protection for wind-powered devices
rencomp seminars
(openPR) - LICHTENAU: Wind-powered devices are particularly endangered by lightning strikes and overvoltages because of their exposed locations and overall heights. Only direct lightning strikes do not represent a Gefährdungspotenzial for wind-powered devices, rather the indirect lightning strikes (in the periphery of up to 1.500 m) as well as transient overvoltages can lead to the complete loss of the plant. There are causes for overvoltages many: Switching actions, electrostatic unloadings and not least thunderstorms. In order particularly to ensure a durable availability of the WEA and their electrical components, sufficient lightning and overvoltage concept are necessary. The costs for this amount to approx. 1% of the total investment sum of the plant. New installations are to a large extent with a lightning protection concept equipped, this can however be pretty often still optimized can. The protection of electronics and electrical connection steps ever more into the foreground. Plants with tower heights of up to 90 m and a rotor diameter of 70 m suffer annually, depending upon location, approximately 10 lightning strikes.
In the seminar „lightning and overvoltage protection for wind-powered devices “are pointed out possibilities for the conversion by security concepts. Downtimes, unnecessary repairs and spare part costs by lightning strike and overvoltage can be avoided.
