Current Turkey: Turkey to environmental awareness force

Ilisu dam - progress at any price (Picture: Wikipedia) (openPR) - with a gigantic control work project - the Ilisu dam - in the southeast of the country the Turkish government wants to improve the power supply on a long-term basis and lastingly lastingly. That approximately 130 meters high and nearly two kilometers broad dam, with the water of the Tigris in the proximity of the Turkish village Ilisu to be accumulated should be finished, should in the year 2013.

But by this project causes social, ecological and historical places are indeterminable and in its long-term consequences hardly to be measured.
With the realization of the project several ten thousand predominantly Kurdish st�mmige humans would have to leave its villages and cities.

�You lose not only their homeland, but also their base of life, without being able to expect a complete remuneration on the part of the Turkish government,� say to it Heike Drillisch of the organization world economy, ecology and development WEED. Also the historical city Hasankeyf with their old bridges, caves and tombs would sink for all times in the lake.

But although the Turkish Prime Minister put recently the foundation-stone for the building of the dam, it is not safe yet whether he is really built. Because to the financing of the construction costses at a value of at present estimated 1.2 billion euro international credit endorsements are, among other things necessarily also a German Hermes endorsement.

Exactly here German environmental protection federations see still another last lever, in order to redirect the project in a social, culture historical and environmentalcompatible direction. The nature protection federation NABU, the environmental donation WWF and the development organization WEED requested the Federal Government therefore to grant no Hermes endorsement for at the building of the disputed Ilisu dam of German building contractor taken part Z�blin AG.

Also in Turkey gives it meanwhile forces, which reject the realization of the dam project in the current form. Thus the conservative delegate suggested Muharrem Doan after a report of the Turkish newspaper H�rryet as alternative accumulating the water only up to 479 meters (instead of the originally planned 510 meters) over the sea level.

The city Hasankeyf with their old bridges, caves and tombs could be saved by the then only approximately one hundred meters high dam. The hook at the thing: the dam operators would have to accept a loss of 15 per cent during the energy production, which would mean approximately 35 million euro reduced receipts per year according to present calculation. Remains being waiting thus, which will happen in the next weeks and months.

Before this background the publishers of CURRENT TURKEY published ROUND-LOOK & GREAT LIVES recently a comment. Therein it meant: �Life is full surprises and is better sometimes it to think about things not because one cannot understand it. No folder and no travel guide over Turkey, in which urgently of it one does not warn, stones or articles, which could be regarded as historical, from Turkey to implement. These witnesses of history are too valuable, the country by notionless tourists or also clevere businessmen would like itself to let rob around these things. High terms of imprisonment threaten those, which offend against the laws.

But then one is very much surprised, how in the interest of �the progress �an enormous dam is to be established, in whose tides a whole city of unbelievable historical importance to sink is. Still it is late for the international community and naturally the Turkish state not too to make corrections at the planned project.�
