Basel: Researchers released earthquakes

The more Nachbeben, the better for Basel. (openPR) - on Saturday it came again into Basel to a lighter earth impact of the Magnitude 3,1. This is brought to Deep Heat Mining back in connection with the Stimulationsarbeiten of the Geothermieprojekts „“. Obviously it comes to these events, although the Stimulationsarbeiten was interrupted and the pressure of the injected water dropped for a long time normal level, announces the magazine EUROPATICKER environmental call (www.umweltruf.de).

Basel is, like the entire southern mash gau a seismic zone.

In historical time it came often to quake, with a Maximalmagnitude up to (probably) 6,5. Because of the logarithmic Magnitudenskala thereby about 27,000 times as much energy became free, as with the earth impact to 8.12.2006.

In all seismic zones one asks oneself, how one can prevent earthquakes. The only method discussed world-wide for this is premature releasing of small earth impacts by water injections, in order to take energy from the earth in such a way and to prevent a large damage quake. This method failed so far however because of it that it is very difficult to locate the active in each case gap in the underground to drill and stimulate. In Basel this succeeded to project with the Geothermie now by accident.

A further problem, with the avoidance of damage quake by premature releasing of small quakes consists of it that many of such geringfügeren events emergency little are, in order to prevent a large. In order to forestall a quake of the Magnitude 4, about 30 earth impacts of the Magnitude 3 would have to be released.

In Basel now fortunately after the earth impact of 8.12.2006 further arose, last to 6.1.2007. With each of these small quakes, which lead to no damage, tension-loaded in the underground energy is extracted from the active gap, which is not to no more then for a larger natural quake at the disposal. The more these small earth impacts now still arise, all the more the risk of a real damage quake one reduces.

Thus: The more Nachbeben, the better for Basel.
