No “half Gods in white” more? Fact is: The white physician smock is insignificant for the physician confidence
(openPR) - does a white physician smock promote the confidence of patients to the medical authority Or do this condition-typical clothes construct completely on the contrary rather communication barriers and do push patients into a role, in which they cannot articulate their fears and desires any longer frankly Scientists from new jersey and Philadelphia in an experimental study followed to this question now.
In addition 20 physicians and lady doctors of a large gynäkologischen university clinic in new jersey, the USA, during a three-month study got different instructions for its clothing. They were assigned to one of three groups in addition by coincidence. They had in this period in their consulting hour
• either casual, completely normal everyday life and road clothes carry
• or however the typical condition clothes of physicians with a long white physician smock
• or also typical hospital clothes, with (usually greener or blue) jacket and trousers.
The lady doctors and physicians got for this completely precise and detailed instructions, which was permitted regarding the shoes, the trousers and skirts, jackets and shirts.
Approximately 1,100 female patients, whom in the three-month period of the study with one or one the Gynäkologen/inside a physician discussion of at least 10 minutes of duration had, were then asked after this discussion to fill out a short questionnaire.
During the evaluation of the questionnaires was it shown then as result: Between the three approximately equal large groups of patients showed up no differences, which concerned the patient satisfaction. Both regarding the total evaluation (when sum of individual aspects and itself well-being feeling, confidence, authority, expertise etc.) and regarding the recommendation to friends and the prognosis, whether one would go again to this physician or this lady doctor, it did not differ the groups. With this analysis also characteristics of the female patients became: Skin color, age, pregnancy etc. with considers.
The scientists point out also again that their results contradict earlier studies, in whom a preference of most patients for condition clothes with white smock and Stethoskop were found. “Obvious”, then argue them, “in these earlier studies plate common by patients in television broadcasts over physicians and in announcements of physicians themselves were only queried.” They do not emphasize that able to communicateness and specialized knowledge for patients are crucial, and outside attributes of a physician.
